Boulevard Community Garden News
January 21, 2009Gardening 2009 |
The new gardening season is upon us. Some of you may have already
started your seedlings. As we move into the new year there are a few items on the agenda for the
Boulevard Community Garden. First up is fees. Last year some of you 'forgot' or otherwise could not
arrange to pay the plots fees. This year, the gate will have a new combination, and only those paid
gardeners will have access - it's only fair. Also, because of the dramatic increase in water usage
fees in the city of Atlanta, our garden fees will be increased slightly. As most of you know, our
water source is primarily from our neighbors, and they need to be reimbursed. The few plot fees that I
collected last year did not put a dent in the true amount of water usage that was generated.
For the 2009 season the garden plot fees will be increased to $35.00 for each plot. These fees will
be directly applied to our water usage, and hopefully we won't run short again in the hottest summer
months.
If you are interested in starting a plot with us, please use our email address at Boulevard Community Garden at GMail
and you will be contacted. If you are a returning gardener, please make arrangements with the caretaker before
March 1, 2009. After that date any unclaimed plots will be available on a first come - first serve basis.

September 12, 2008Mulching |
We have received one load of fresh mulch, which has already been mostly
spread across the garden pathways. The remainder of this delivery will be used in the front part of the garden,
next to the sidewalk. Once this load of mulch is dispersed, I have been told that another delivery will be made.
This second load of mulch will be used around the interior edges of the garden, with any remaining to be
spread on individual plots. If any remains after that, it will be composted. You are more than welcome
to help distribute this mulch. (My back will certainly give thanks.) So, if you see a pile of mulch
on the sidewalk, feel free to volunteer. Thank you.

September 5, 2008Garden Sign |
The Boulevard Community Garden sign has been completed. A picture of
our sign now graces the top of each page of this site. It looks even better up close and personal. If you're
in the neighborhood then drop in and check it out. We want to thank Emily for her valuable time and effort
in repainting our sign. It has the same feel as the original garden sign, a sort of late 60's look. You can
get a look at the original by clicking on the Green Speak Article, on the left column of this page.

August 27, 2008Winter Garden plots are now available |
The garden is now accepting winter gardeners for the period of September 1, 2008 through the last day of February, 2009.
The price for a winter plot is $20.00, payable in cash only. No checks, money orders or credit cards will be accepted. It may
be possible to work out an in-kind arrangement in lieu of cash. For the 2008 gardeners already in place, you will be grandfathered into
the winter schedule, providing that your existing plot has been maintained throughout the spring and summer seasons. Some of you
have not been around all season, and so these plots will be the first to be bid - after I have removed the existing weeds in them.
Also, some of you have not yet paid, so please don't expect to be grandfathered into the Winter Season.

August 6, 2008The drought continues |
Even though we have been receiving a bit of rain lately, the drought that we have been experiencing still continues. I know
it may be hard to believe when you look at the lush growth in our garden. Be assured that most of this growth is weeds, which
still thrive even in the driest of conditions.
We are fortunate in that some of our neighbors are willing to donate water for our tanks, but in the past these neighbors
have also been paid. That is what your financial support to the garden provides. In the 2008 season, most of this money
was collected by the previous caretaker, and I'm not certain how much was given to the neighbors for our water. As you
all know, there were some water shortages this season and the previous statement is a part the reason. Also,
the drug dealers and lay-abouts in our neighborhood have managed to shoot holes into our water tanks. The holes
are patched, we'll see how permanantly over time.
Please be mindful that our water supplies are extremely limited, and avoid deep or excessive watering. If possible,
please bring a little water from home to augment our limited supplies. Every little bit helps.

July 16, 2008Our Garden Sign |
Work is still progressing on the garden sign out in front. I know, it's going slowly, but
be assured it is still in progress. Our friend, Emily, has graciously given this gift to us, and if you remember
how that sign used to look then you know it was overdue for a facelift. She may also paint some of the concrete
pieces that border some of the plots. The paints that she uses are non-toxic acrylics, so there is no harm to the
environment or to your vegetables or plants. Emily has also inquired about erecting some sort of shrine within
the garden, and I have tentatively given her the nod to do this - providing that whatever she proposes is not
religious or secular or political. Be advised that Emily is one busy woman, so we are grateful for whatever
time she can freely allow to the garden. To see more about Emily please visit her blog at NotAGlumLot

June 4, 2008How to contact the garden |
It may seem at times that there is no one around. That's not quite true. In fact, the garden itself is a non-profit
and the caretaker position is a non-paying position, so that necessitates that the caretaker be away some of the time. But there is a solution. Try using the
e-mail address for the garden, which is: boulevardcommunitygarden@gmail.com. You might be surprised to get a faster reply
than if you stood at the gate all day waiting for someone to appear.
